SEEING WITH SOUND
"Seeing with Sound"
Artist Statement by Lynn Seward
This piece was created to portray what a shape might sound like.
It also plays with accessibility themes in a way that asks us to consider how we are approaching accommodations for people.

Accessibility themes are used ironically as a viewer who is deaf will understand from the sign language that a sound will play, however they may not be able to hear that sound. If a viewer is blind is listening to this clip, then they will be able to hear the sounds but would not have the description of what is happening to know that it represents a shape. Also, someone who does not sign, may also not have the understanding from the portion that is signed, to understand that what you are hearing is representative of the sound of shapes.

It is difficult to plan for all accommodation needs, however it is important to remember that we are usually missing a few key elements, and this piece aims to address that. I pose to you the question of how someone might address all accessibility needs in a clip such as this? How might we consider adapting this film so that more people can receive the whole picture or message. Is it possible?

Please remember to consider accessible features in your own private and public lives so that their are limited or no barriers for the people in our community. If you have questions about how you can do this see Ontario Accessibility Laws.
